Description
Bangladesh witnessed the end of a major political era on Tuesday with the demise of former Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia at the age of 80. Her death marks the conclusion of a significant chapter in the nation’s post-independence political history, characterised by intense political rivalry, alternating governments, and key democratic developments.
Prolonged Health Struggles and Final Moments
Khaleda Zia passed away in Dhaka after battling serious health complications for several months. She was admitted to the intensive care unit at Evercare Hospital, where she was undergoing treatment for multiple chronic ailments, including heart disease, kidney and liver disorders, diabetes, respiratory issues, arthritis, and eye-related conditions. Medical sources confirmed that she had a permanent pacemaker and had previously undergone cardiac stenting. Although she returned from London in May after receiving specialised treatment, her condition remained unstable under continuous medical supervision.
Entry into Politics and Rise to Leadership
Born in 1945, Khaleda Zia entered public life following the assassination of her husband, former president Ziaur Rahman, in 1981. She took over the leadership of the BNP in 1984 and quickly rose as a prominent opposition figure. In 1991, she led her party to electoral victory, becoming Bangladesh’s first woman Prime Minister. She later served two non-consecutive terms, from 1991 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2006, playing a key role in shaping the country’s parliamentary democracy and economic policies during critical transitional periods.
Condolences and International Reactions
Interim government head Muhammad Yunus expressed profound sorrow, calling her death a significant loss to the nation. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended condolences, recalling her contributions to India–Bangladesh relations and their meeting in Dhaka in 2015. Her passing comes amid a sensitive political climate, with national elections expected in early 2026 and her son, Tarique Rahman, having recently returned from long exile. Khaleda Zia remained the principal political rival of Sheikh Hasina, who went into exile following unrest in 2024.
A Lasting Political Legacy
Khaleda Zia played a defining role in establishing Bangladesh’s competitive two-party political system and normalising women’s leadership at the highest level of governance. Despite prolonged illness and legal challenges in her later years, she remained a symbolic and unifying figure for the BNP and its supporters. Her death leaves a significant leadership void as Bangladesh prepares for a crucial electoral phase.
