Description
In Jalore district of Rajasthan, a caste panchayat has issued a controversial order banning married women from using smartphones. The decision, made by the Sundhamata Patti panchayat of the Chaudhary clan at a meeting on December 21 in Ghazipur village, will take effect from Republic Day 2026. The move has drawn sharp criticism from women’s rights groups and social activists.
Scope of the Ban
Under the resolution, daughters-in-law and young women in 15 villages of the Bhinmal–Khanpur area—including Ghazipur, Pawali, Kalda, and Khanpur—will not be allowed to carry smartphones with cameras to weddings, public events, or while visiting neighbours. They will be permitted to use only basic phones for voice calls. The decision was formally read out by panch Himmataram and approved with the reported agreement of elders and panchayat members.
Reasoning Behind the Decision
According to community head Sujanaram Chaudhary, the ban is intended to curb mobile addiction and safeguard children’s eyesight. He noted that children often use women’s smartphones, leading to prolonged screen time. The panchayat suggested that restricting smartphones could foster better family discipline and support child welfare.
Educational Exceptions
Girls pursuing education are allowed to use smartphones at home strictly for academic purposes. However, they are still barred from taking phones to social gatherings or when visiting neighbours.
Public Reaction
The announcement quickly circulated on social media, prompting widespread criticism. Observers argue that the diktat is an attempt to control women’s behavior and enforce traditional ideas of family honour. Questions have also been raised about the legality and enforceability of the directive. The issue has sparked renewed debate on gender equality, digital rights, and the role of extra-legal community bodies in rural India.
