Description
Punjab is gearing up to host the 150th edition of the Shree Baba Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan, the nation’s oldest Hindustani classical music festival, starting tomorrow evening at Shree Devi Talab Temple in Jalandhar. This three-day event celebrates over a century of India’s classical music tradition and continues a legacy that began in the 19th century.
Organisers and Cultural Support
The festival is presented in collaboration with the North Zone Cultural Centre under the Union Ministry of Culture, with backing from the Punjab government. Over the years, the Harivallabh Sammelan has emerged as a premier platform for celebrated Hindustani classical musicians, promoting and sustaining India’s rich musical heritage.
Honouring Icons of Music and Spirituality
The 150th edition pays tribute to the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, highlighting his legacy of courage and sacrifice. It also commemorates the late Pt Chhannu Lal Mishra of the Banaras Gharana, who passed away in October this year, recognising his outstanding contributions to Indian classical music.
Line-Up of Renowned Artists
The festival, taking place from December 26 to 28, features a lineup of esteemed performers, including folk and classical vocalist Malini Awasthi, vocalists Pt Sajan Mishra and Swaransh Mishra, flautist Pt Ronu Majumdar, Carnatic flautist Shashank Subramanyam, vocalists Ashwini Bhide and Pt Sanjeev Abhyankar, guitarist Pt Shubhendra Rao alongside cellist Saskia Rao-de-Haas, and Dagar Gharana exponent Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar.
A Celebration of India’s Musical Heritage
Accompanied by leading percussionists like Pt Vijay Ghate and V Selvaganesh, the 150th edition of the Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan highlights India’s living classical music tradition. The festival continues to connect musicians and audiences across generations, underscoring the enduring cultural importance of Hindustani classical music.
