Description
The Uttar Pradesh government has set January 2026 as the proposed opening month for the Noida International Airport at Jewar. The timeline was shared by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath while addressing the state Assembly during the final sitting of the Winter Session.
Why Is the Airport Significant?
Once operational, the Jewar facility will become Uttar Pradesh’s fifth airport handling international flights. It is expected to ease pressure on existing airports in the National Capital Region and improve long-distance air connectivity for western Uttar Pradesh.
How Has Aviation Changed in Uttar Pradesh?
According to the chief minister, air travel infrastructure in the state has undergone a major shift since 2017. Earlier, only a small number of airports were fully functional, with limited flight operations at a few locations. Today, 16 airports are operational, reflecting a sharp expansion in regional and domestic connectivity. Among them, four currently have international status, with Jewar set to be added to the list.
What Makes Jewar Airport Different?
The airport is being constructed as a greenfield project in Gautam Buddh Nagar district. Once all development phases are completed, it is expected to surpass other Indian airports in terms of overall land size and passenger handling potential. The project follows a public-private partnership model, aimed at ensuring efficient operations and long-term scalability.
Broader Infrastructure Push
The state government has linked the airport project with wider infrastructure development. Uttar Pradesh has expanded its expressway network, introduced metro rail systems in key cities, and improved road and rail links with neighbouring states. Officials expect the Jewar airport to support logistics, tourism, industrial growth, and investment inflows across the region.
Why Was the Timeline Revised?
The first phase of the airport was initially expected to start operations in September 2024. However, construction-related challenges and regulatory processes resulted in multiple deadline revisions. The January 2026 target reflects the government’s intention to complete all critical facilities before opening the airport for commercial use.
