In a major advancement for India’s medical technology sector, Bengaluru-based start-up VoxelGrids has successfully developed the country’s first fully indigenous MRI scanner. This achievement marks a significant step in reducing India’s reliance on imported diagnostic equipment and promoting the “Made in India” initiative in high-end healthcare technology.

Breakthrough In Domestic Medical Imaging

The 1.5-tesla MRI scanner created by VoxelGrids has been installed at the Chandrapur Cancer Care Foundation near Nagpur. The project is the result of a 12-year research and development effort led by founder Arjun Arunachalam, with the goal of designing and producing MRI technology entirely within India—an area long dominated by international manufacturers.

Cost and Technological Advantages

Unlike MRI machines from multinational companies like Siemens and GE HealthCare, VoxelGrids’ scanner does not require liquid helium. This innovation reduces production costs by almost 40%. The company has also designed compact, energy-efficient electronics around the magnet while maintaining standard bore size, lowering both power consumption and operational costs.

Expanding Access Through Flexible Models

To make the technology more accessible, VoxelGrids plans to introduce pay-per-use pricing, allowing hospitals to manage expenses without heavy upfront investments. This model could particularly benefit small and mid-sized hospitals, addressing a significant need: India currently has roughly 5,000 MRI machines, which is about 3.5 scanners per million people, highlighting a substantial gap in diagnostic infrastructure.

Manufacturing Capacity and Future Plans

VoxelGrids’ Bengaluru facility can currently produce 20–25 MRI scanners per year. With $5 million in funding from Zoho, the start-up aims for a commercial launch by the end of the financial year. Looking ahead, the company plans to introduce mobile, containerized MRI units and explore export opportunities once domestic demand is met.
