Indian Coast Guard Inducts Samudra Pratap, First Indigenous Pollution Control Vessel

The Indian Coast Guard has added its first specialised Pollution Control Vessel, Samudra Pratap, to its fleet, marking a significant advancement in India’s maritime environmental protection and response capabilities. The vessel was formally inducted at an official ceremony held at Goa Shipyard Limited, highlighting the country’s growing focus on indigenous shipbuilding and marine pollution management.

Indigenous Construction and National Importance

Samudra Pratap is the first Pollution Control Vessel of its kind to be fully designed and built in India for the Coast Guard. Constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited with over 60 per cent indigenous components, the vessel reflects the objectives of the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. Its induction substantially strengthens India’s preparedness to tackle marine pollution incidents and uphold environmental regulations in coastal and offshore waters.

Modern Weaponry and Mission Systems

Alongside its pollution control role, the vessel is equipped with modern defensive and mission systems. These include a 30 mm CRN-91 naval gun and two 12.7 mm stabilised remote-controlled weapons, supported by advanced fire-control technology. Several onboard mission systems have been developed domestically, improving operational efficiency while reducing dependence on imported equipment. This multi-role capability allows the ship to undertake maritime security and law enforcement duties in addition to environmental missions.

Enhanced Pollution Response Capabilities

Samudra Pratap features advanced manoeuvring and pollution response technologies. It is the first vessel in the Coast Guard’s pollution control fleet to be fitted with a retractable stern thruster, a Dynamic Positioning System and flush-type side sweeping arms. The ship carries specialised pollution response equipment, a dedicated response boat with davit, high-capacity external firefighting systems, a sea boat davit and a shaft generator. These systems enable precise positioning and effective containment, recovery and mitigation of marine pollutants during emergencies.

Strengthening Maritime Environmental Security

With the induction of Samudra Pratap, the Indian Coast Guard’s capacity to protect the marine environment within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone has been significantly enhanced. The vessel will play a crucial role in pollution control operations, disaster response, search and rescue missions and enforcement of maritime laws, reinforcing India’s commitment to maintaining safe, secure and environmentally sustainable seas.
