Description

Union Minister for Power, Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal on Monday formally launched the commercial operations of Unit–2 (250 MW) of the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project through a virtual ceremony. The commissioning represents a key advancement in India’s largest hydropower venture and underlines the country’s push towards clean and sustainable energy, with a special focus on the North-Eastern region.

Key Milestone in India’s Hydropower Expansion

Addressing the event, the minister said the commissioning reflects years of sustained effort and collective commitment rather than just an engineering accomplishment. He noted that the Subansiri project embodies India’s determination to scale up renewable energy capacity, reinforce grid stability and progress towards Net Zero targets, while also driving socio-economic development in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and the broader North-East.

Commissioning Roadmap Ahead

Following the operationalisation of Unit–2, work is progressing towards bringing three additional 250 MW units online in the near future. The remaining four units are planned to be commissioned in stages during 2026–27. Once fully operational, the project is expected to produce about 7,422 million units of clean electricity every year, making a substantial contribution to India’s green energy output and overall grid reliability.

Engineering Significance and Flood Management

The Subansiri Lower project is a run-of-the-river hydropower scheme with limited pondage and features the tallest dam in North-East India—a 116-metre-high concrete gravity structure. As the first dam in a cascaded series on the Subansiri River, it also plays a vital role in flood moderation. The project has a flood cushion capacity of 442 million cubic metres, with nearly one-third of its total reservoir storage of 1,365 million cubic metres kept vacant during flood periods to absorb excess inflows and safeguard downstream areas.

Regional Development and NHPC’s Contribution

NHPC Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta highlighted that the project will ensure dependable renewable power while promoting sustainable growth in the region. During construction, it generated employment for around 7,000 local workers on a daily basis. The power generated will be shared among 16 beneficiary states, with free power allocated to Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, and 1,000 MW reserved specifically for the North-East. NHPC has also undertaken extensive investments in riverbank protection, livelihood support and corporate social responsibility initiatives, reaffirming its position as a fully green energy enterprise contributing to India’s clean energy transition.
