India Optel Partners with Safran to Strengthen Indigenous Defence Manufacturing

India Optel Limited has entered into a significant collaboration with France-based Safran Electronics & Defense to locally manufacture two advanced, combat-tested defence systems. This partnership strengthens India’s defence industrial ecosystem by facilitating technology transfer and domestic production in line with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Collaboration Agreement Overview

The agreement, formalised between India Optel Limited and Safran Electronics & Defense, covers the production of the SIGMA 30N Digital Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Navigation System and the CM3-MR Direct Firing Sight. The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials, including Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary (Defence Production). This move builds upon an earlier internal understanding reached in January 2024.

Systems Included in the Agreement

• SIGMA 30N Digital Ring Laser Gyro INS: This system supports artillery, air defence platforms, missiles, and radar systems, providing precise navigation and targeting even in environments where GPS is unavailable.

• CM3-MR Direct Firing Sight: Designed to enhance the accuracy and responsiveness of artillery guns and anti-drone systems, this system improves direct-fire operations in combat scenarios.

India Optel Limited’s Role

India Optel Limited, a Defence PSU, will undertake the manufacturing, assembly, testing, quality assurance, and full life-cycle support of these systems. The initiative ensures that the equipment meets the operational standards of the Indian Army while advancing domestic capabilities in high-tech defence electronics.

Strategic Importance

The SIGMA 30N enables autonomous operational capabilities by rapidly identifying enemy battery positions after hostile fire detection. This collaboration complements Safran’s joint venture with Bharat Electronics Limited for the production of HAMMER precision-guided munitions in India. Collectively, these developments underscore India’s focus on indigenising critical defence technologies, enhancing operational readiness, and reducing dependence on imported systems.
