Description
INS Sindhughosh, the first submarine of her class inducted into the Indian Navy, was formally decommissioned after completing four decades of active service, bringing to a close an important phase in India’s conventional submarine operations. The decommissioning ceremony was conducted at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, honouring the vessel’s long-standing contribution to national maritime defence.
Decommissioning at Mumbai Naval Dockyard
The submarine was officially retired from service at sunset on December 19, 2025, in a ceremony attended by Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command. Naval authorities highlighted the submarine’s distinguished operational record during its 40 years of deployment.
Command and Distinguished Attendees
INS Sindhughosh was paid off under the command of Lieutenant Commander Rajat Sharma. Captain K R Ajrekar (Retd), who served as the submarine’s second Commanding Officer, was present as the guest of honour. The ceremony also saw participation from senior naval veterans, including former Chief of Naval Staff Admiral V S Shekhawat (Retd), along with past commanding officers, members of the original commissioning crew and other senior officers.
Service Record and Strategic Contribution
Inducted into service in the mid-1980s, INS Sindhughosh played a key role in enhancing India’s underwater combat capabilities during a period of significant expansion and modernisation of the submarine arm. As the lead boat of her class, she set operational standards and was actively involved in patrol duties, crew training and strategic deterrence missions across vital maritime zones.
Fleet Modernisation and Future Outlook
The retirement of INS Sindhughosh reflects the Indian Navy’s ongoing transition towards next-generation submarines and advanced underwater platforms. As ageing vessels are phased out after extended service lives, the Navy continues to prioritise fleet modernisation, operational preparedness and the induction of technologically superior assets to maintain maritime security.
