Description
Oman has launched its first polymer one-rial banknote, marking a major advancement in the country’s currency design and security measures. Issued by the Central Bank of Oman, the new note will officially enter circulation on January 11, 2026, and will coexist with existing paper-based one-rial notes as legal tender.
Shift to Polymer Currency
This marks Oman’s first foray into polymer-based banknotes. Compared to traditional cotton notes, polymer currency is more durable, resistant to wear and tear, and better suited for hot and humid climates. The adoption of polymer aligns Oman with a growing number of countries that have transitioned to polymer to reduce replacement costs and enhance anti-counterfeiting measures.
Design Highlights Reflecting Heritage and Industry
The polymer one-rial note measures 145 by 76 millimetres and combines cultural and economic symbolism. The front side features the Oman Botanic Garden, representing Oman’s environmental conservation efforts. The reverse side depicts the Sayyid Tariq bin Taimur Cultural Complex alongside the Duqm Port and Refinery, showcasing the nation’s industrial development and rich cultural heritage.
Enhanced Security Features
Security is a key focus of the new banknote. A large transparent window, inspired by the arches of the Oman Botanic Garden, provides both aesthetic appeal and protection against forgery. The front also includes a colour-shifting foil featuring the frankincense tree, while the bank’s logo on the reverse is printed with iridescent, colour-changing ink, adding another layer of counterfeit deterrence.
Circulation and Collector Editions
The Central Bank confirmed that the polymer note will circulate alongside existing one-rial paper notes without affecting their legal status. In addition, limited collector editions, including uncut sheets and specially packaged notes, will be made available starting January 11, 2026, through designated Central Bank branches and Oman Post outlets, catering to both public interest and numismatic enthusiasts.
