Description

The Prime Minister of India recently conveyed his greetings to all personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on the occasion of its Raising Day, recognising the force’s vital role in safeguarding India’s borders and strengthening internal security.

About Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)

The Sashastra Seema Bal is one of India’s Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs). It was originally established in 1963 as the Special Service Bureau in the aftermath of the Sino-Indian conflict of 1962, with the primary objective of strengthening border security and building confidence among border populations. In 2001, it was renamed Sashastra Seema Bal and was formally assigned a border-guarding role.

The force functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and is entrusted with guarding India’s open international borders with Nepal and Bhutan, which are unique due to free movement arrangements.

Mandate and Core Responsibilities

The primary mandate of the SSB is to ensure the security and integrity of India’s borders with Nepal and Bhutan. In addition to border guarding, the force plays a critical role in maintaining internal security and preventing cross-border threats.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Preventing smuggling, trafficking, illegal immigration, and transnational crimes

  • Stopping unauthorised entry and exit across the international border

  • Collecting intelligence and maintaining vigilance in sensitive border areas

  • Assisting in law and order duties, election security, and disaster response when required

  • Participating in counter-insurgency and counter-unrest operations as assigned by the central government

  • Contributing to United Nations peacekeeping missions when deployed

Community Engagement and Development Role

A distinctive feature of the SSB is its emphasis on border population engagement. The force works to foster a sense of security and national integration among people living in border regions. As part of its civic action and social responsibility initiatives, SSB undertakes:

  • Construction of schools, community buildings, toilets, and roads

  • Organising medical camps, awareness programmes, and skill development activities

  • Supporting border area development plans to improve infrastructure and livelihoods

Organisational Structure

The SSB is headed by a Director General, who is either an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer or a senior CAPF officer. The force is organised along infantry lines and includes:

  • Regular battalions deployed along borders

  • Specialised units such as engineering, communication (signals), medical wings, and dog squads

  • Dedicated training centres for capacity building and professional excellence

Significance

The SSB plays a crucial role in securing India’s strategically sensitive borders while balancing security imperatives with people-friendly policing. Its dual focus on border management and community welfare makes it a key pillar of India’s internal security framework.
