Description

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has uncovered one of the most extreme and unusual exoplanets ever observed outside the Solar System. Located roughly 2,000 light-years from Earth, PSR J2322-2650b exhibits a distinctive lemon-like shape, challenging existing ideas about planetary structure and survival in extreme cosmic environments.

A Planet in a Hostile Orbit

PSR J2322-2650b orbits a millisecond pulsar, an ultra-dense stellar remnant formed after a star collapses. Unlike typical planets that revolve around bright stars, this exoplanet circles an object about the mass of the Sun compressed into the size of a city. It completes a full orbit in just 7.8 hours, traveling at a distance of nearly one million miles, exposing it to intense gravitational forces and high-energy radiation.

Extreme Temperatures and Tidal Forces

The planet’s proximity to the pulsar subjects it to extreme heating. Temperatures on the side facing the pulsar reach approximately 3,700°F, while the far side remains around 1,200°F. The enormous thermal differences, combined with strong gravitational forces, stretch the planet along its orbit, giving it the unusual lemon-like shape caused by tidal deformation.

A Chemically Distinct Atmosphere

Infrared observations from JWST reveal an atmospheric composition unlike any previously recorded. The planet’s atmosphere is rich in carbon-based molecules, such as C? and C?, along with helium, while oxygen and nitrogen are almost entirely absent. This makes PSR J2322-2650b chemically distinct from the more than 150 exoplanets studied so far.

Carbon Clouds and Theoretical Challenges

JWST data indicate the presence of carbon-rich soot clouds, with extreme interior pressures potentially allowing carbon to crystallise. Current models of planetary formation struggle to explain such a carbon-dominated environment, positioning PSR J2322-2650b as a remarkable example of how Webb continues to challenge our understanding of planet formation and survival in the universe’s most extreme conditions.
