Uttar Pradesh is poised to make history with the creation of India’s first dedicated forest university, a significant step towards advancing education and research in forestry, wildlife, and environmental sciences. Defying expectations that such a university would be situated in a metropolitan area, the institution will be established in Gorakhpur, in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Location and Campus Details

The university will be developed on a sprawling 125-acre campus in Gorakhpur, strategically positioned near the Jatayu Conservation and Breeding Centre, an area renowned for wildlife and environmental conservation. With land approvals already secured, the project is moving forward after receiving necessary administrative clearances.

Vision and Academic Focus

Designed as a specialised institution, the forest university will focus solely on forest-related sciences. Its academic programmes will encompass forestry, agroforestry, social forestry, horticulture, wildlife studies, ecology, climate change, and environmental sustainability. The curriculum will emphasise hands-on learning, fieldwork, and applied research in natural ecosystems, offering students practical exposure alongside theoretical knowledge.

Government Initiative and Funding

The project was announced by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who highlighted its importance in developing skilled professionals for forest management and conservation. The state government allocated ?50 crore in the 2024 budget to kickstart preliminary work. The draft Act for the establishment of the university is under final review, following which the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will initiate the tendering and construction process.

Infrastructure and National Importance

The campus will feature hostels for approximately 500 students, separate residential facilities for men and women, well-equipped laboratories, classrooms, an auditorium, sports complexes, and faculty housing. The university is expected to attract students and researchers from across India and internationally. Once operational, it will serve as a national hub for forest education, biodiversity research, and conservation training, greatly enhancing India’s capabilities in environmental protection and sustainable forest management.
