Australian authorities have confirmed that the deadly Bondi Beach terror attack was carried out by a father-son pair, Sajid Akram and Naveed Akram. The shooting, considered one of the worst mass attacks in Australia in decades, targeted a Jewish community event celebrating the first night of Hanukkah near Sydney’s Bondi Beach, resulting in at least 15 fatalities.

Background of Sajid Akram

Sajid Akram, 50, was fatally shot by police at the scene. A fruit seller from the Bonnyrigg area of Sydney, he legally possessed firearms under a Category AB licence, valid since 2015. Police confirmed that multiple registered firearms owned by him were used during the attack. Sajid was also a member of a gun club and complied with all requirements under New South Wales’ Firearms Act.

Profile of Naveed Akram

Naveed Akram, 24, Sajid’s son, sustained critical injuries during the police response and is currently hospitalised under guard, with his condition reported as stable. Naveed had recently lost employment as a bricklayer and was reportedly studying at Al-Murad Institute, which teaches Arabic and Quranic studies, in addition to attending universities in Australia and Pakistan. Authorities have indicated that he is expected to face criminal charges once medically cleared.

Circumstances of the Attack

The assault occurred around 6:47 pm local time during the annual Jewish community event “Chanukah by the Sea.” Investigators recovered an improvised explosive device in a vehicle linked to the attackers, highlighting the premeditated nature of the attack. Initial fears of additional assailants were ruled out after investigations confirmed that only the father and son were involved.
