Description
Siliserh Lake in Rajasthan’s Alwar district has been accorded Ramsar site status, marking it as India’s 96th wetland of international importance. The announcement by the Convention on Wetlands reflects India’s increasing focus on safeguarding ecologically vital water bodies. Alongside Siliserh, the Kopra reservoir in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district has also been included in the global list.
Global Recognition for Wetland Protection
The Ramsar tag underscores Siliserh Lake’s importance for biodiversity conservation, water security, and climate resilience. Authorities said the designation will help strengthen conservation measures while promoting the sustainable use of wetland resources. It also brings India’s wetland protection efforts in line with international environmental commitments.
Rich Biodiversity and Ecological Role
Siliserh Lake is renowned for its diverse flora and fauna as well as its picturesque setting. The wetland provides habitat to more than 100 species of birds and animals, including migratory species such as cranes and resident birds like kingfishers. Serving as a crucial feeding and nesting ground, the lake attracts birdwatchers and nature lovers. Its location near the Sariska Tiger Reserve further adds to its ecological value within the Aravalli range.
Heritage Significance and Local Benefits
Built in 1845 by Maharaja Vinay Singh, Siliserh Lake was originally designed to supply drinking water to Alwar city. Traces of historic aqueducts around the lake continue to showcase its engineering and cultural heritage. Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav described the Ramsar recognition as a collective achievement of local communities, noting that it would enhance conservation efforts, encourage eco-tourism, and strengthen water management in the region. The Ramsar status is also expected to raise Siliserh Lake’s profile as a sustainable tourism destination, supporting local livelihoods while ensuring ecological protection through stricter conservation norms.
