Description
The Indian Navy is set to induct DSC A20, the first vessel in the indigenously designed Diving Support Craft (DSC) series, at Kochi on 16 December 2025. Commissioning under the Southern Naval Command, this milestone significantly enhances the Navy’s underwater operational capabilities and underscores India’s growing self-reliance in naval shipbuilding.
Indigenous Design and Construction
DSC A20 is the lead ship of a five-vessel series being constructed by Titagarh Rail Systems Limited in Kolkata. Specifically designed for a range of diving and underwater missions in coastal waters, the craft adheres to Indian Naval Rules and Indian Register of Shipping standards. Its design underwent extensive model testing at NSTL Visakhapatnam, ensuring optimal performance and safety.
Advanced Capabilities and Technical Features
Featuring state-of-the-art diving systems, DSC A20 is equipped to support inspection, salvage, and underwater maintenance operations. Its catamaran hull offers enhanced stability, increased deck space, and superior seakeeping. With a displacement of approximately 390 tons, the vessel is capable of reliable performance under diverse operational conditions.
Boosting Aatmanirbharta in Maritime Sector
The induction of DSC A20 reflects the progress of the Make in India initiative, highlighting successful collaboration between the Navy, domestic shipyards, and national research institutions. The project demonstrates India’s growing ability to design and build specialised naval platforms that meet modern operational demands.
Operational Role under Southern Naval Command
Post-commissioning, DSC A20 will operate from Kochi, supporting diving missions, underwater inspections, and coastal deployments. Its induction strengthens the Navy’s underwater support capabilities and enhances preparedness for specialised missions in littoral zones.
