Description
Senior journalist Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty has been elected as the first woman president of the Press Club of India, marking a historic milestone for one of the nation’s leading media institutions. Her election reflects a significant step toward greater gender representation in media leadership in the country’s capital.
Historic Victory in Press Club Elections
Pisharoty’s panel achieved a clean sweep, winning all office-bearer and managing committee positions with a decisive 21–0 score. The elections were held on Saturday, with results declared on Sunday. The overwhelming mandate underscores widespread confidence in her leadership and vision, especially at a time when the media sector faces ethical, professional, and institutional challenges.
Newly Elected Office-Bearers
Alongside Pisharoty’s presidency, Afzal Imam was elected secretary general, and Jatin Gandhi assumed the role of vice-president. Aditi Rajput and P R Sunil were elected treasurer and joint secretary respectively, both unopposed. The executive team is expected to focus on issues such as press freedom, journalist welfare, and structural reforms within the Club.
Composition of the Managing Committee
The 16-member managing committee represents a wide spectrum of media expertise, spanning print, digital, and broadcast journalism. Members include Niraj Kumar, Abhishek Kumar Singh, Jahanvi Sen, Ashok Kaushik, Kallol Bhattacharjee, Praveen Jain, Agraj Pratap Singh, Manoj Sharma, Nyanima Basu, P B Suresh, V P Pandey, Prem Bahukhandi, Sneha Bhura, Javed Akhtar, Rezaul Hasan Laskar, and Sunil Kumar.
Significance for Indian Journalism
Pisharoty’s election is seen as a landmark for gender representation in Indian media institutions.
