Description
Chhattisgarh has achieved an important environmental milestone with the inclusion of Kopra Reservoir in Bilaspur district in the list of Ramsar Sites, making it the state’s first wetland to receive global recognition. The designation places Kopra among wetlands of international importance and highlights Chhattisgarh’s growing focus on biodiversity protection and sustainable water resource management.
International Recognition for Kopra Reservoir
The Ramsar status was formally announced on December 12, 2025, following coordinated efforts by the State Wetland Authority, forest department officials, environmental scientists, researchers and local communities. Authorities noted that Kopra Reservoir represents a distinctive wetland ecosystem shaped by a combination of natural processes and human intervention. The waterbody is largely rain-dependent and replenished by seasonal streams, making it an essential freshwater resource in the region.
Ecological Value and Local Benefits
Kopra Reservoir plays a key role in meeting the drinking water needs of surrounding villages and supports irrigation across productive agricultural areas in its catchment. In addition to its importance for water security, the wetland sustains rich biodiversity. It provides habitat for a wide range of aquatic species, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects and extensive aquatic plant life.
Haven for Migratory Birds and Rare Species
The wetland also serves as a seasonal refuge for migratory birds during winter months. Surveys conducted by the State Wetland Authority have recorded several notable species in the area, such as the river tern, common pochard, and Egyptian vulture. The presence of these species, along with the site’s ecological diversity, played a major role in securing Ramsar recognition.
State’s Long-Term Conservation Vision
Forest and Climate Change Minister Kedar Kashyap described the Ramsar listing as a matter of pride for the state, citing the reservoir’s vibrant aquatic ecosystem and avian diversity. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai linked the achievement to the Chhattisgarh Anjor Vision 2047, which outlines plans to secure Ramsar status for 20 wetlands by 2030, reflecting the state’s long-term commitment to environmental conservation and adherence to global ecological standards.
