• Some sections expand slowly, only about 1 cm per year, while others spread much faster up to 20 cm per year.

The tallest underwater mountain is Mauna Kea in Hawaii. The part above water is only a small portion; measured from its base on the ocean floor to its peak, it rises more than 10,000 metres, making it taller than Mount Everest from base to summit.

Although the Mid-Ocean Ridge is the longest mountain range overall, the Andes in South America are the longest land-based range, stretching for about 7,000 kilometres.
