Description
The Mid-Ocean Ridge is one of Earth’s most remarkable features, yet it remains hidden deep beneath the oceans. The seafloor is covered with massive mountains, long chains of ridges, and dramatic landscapes that few people ever get to witness. Among these underwater formations, one stands out because of its incredible size.
Earth’s Longest Underwater Mountain Chain
The Mid-Ocean Ridge (MOR) forms the longest mountain range on the planet more than 65,000 kilometres long. This gigantic system winds through the world’s oceans like a global boundary, making it the largest continuous mountain chain found anywhere on Earth.
Why the Mid-Ocean Ridge Exists
The ridge forms where Earth’s tectonic plates slowly drift in opposite directions. When this happens, material from deeper inside the Earth rises to the surface, cools down, and becomes new seafloor. This ongoing activity is known as seafloor spreading, and it constantly adds fresh crust to the ocean bottom.
A Hidden Volcanic World
Much of Earth’s volcanic activity happens along this underwater ridge. Countless volcanoes and cracks lie along its length, creating the biggest volcanic system on the planet all of it far below the surface.
Strange Life Around Hydrothermal Vents
The Mid-Ocean Ridge is also home to hydrothermal vents, which release super-heated water full of minerals. These vents support deep-sea creatures that live without sunlight, such as giant tube worms and special shrimp. Instead of using light for energy, these organisms rely on chemosynthesis, using chemicals from the vent water to survive.
Interesting Things to Know About the Mid-Ocean Ridge
It covers almost a quarter of Earth’s surface.
Some sections expand slowly, only about 1 cm per year, while others spread much faster up to 20 cm per year.
Slow-moving areas often have deep valleys resembling huge canyons.
Iceland is the only place where part of the ridge rises above sea level.
Major underwater earthquakes have occurred along this ridge.
Tallest Underwater Mountain
The tallest underwater mountain is Mauna Kea in Hawaii. The part above water is only a small portion; measured from its base on the ocean floor to its peak, it rises more than 10,000 metres, making it taller than Mount Everest from base to summit.
Longest Mountain Range on Land
Although the Mid-Ocean Ridge is the longest mountain range overall, the Andes in South America are the longest land-based range, stretching for about 7,000 kilometres.
