Description
Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa has achieved a landmark feat by qualifying for the Candidates 2026 through his victory in the FIDE Circuit 2025. This makes him India’s only male representative at the upcoming world championship qualifiers, marking a historic moment for Indian chess.
Outstanding Circuit Performances Lead to Qualification
Praggnanandhaa’s consistent excellence on the international stage proved decisive. He triumphed at prestigious events including the Wijk Aan Zee Masters, Superbet Chess Classic Romania, UzChess Cup Masters, and the London Chess Classic Open. His steady results earned him the highest FIDE Circuit points, guaranteeing direct entry into the Candidates.
Strong Showing in Global Tournaments
Beyond his tournament wins, Praggnanandhaa was runner-up at the Stepan Avagyan Memorial and finished 12th at the Sinquefield Cup, competing against top-tier opponents. His advancement to the fourth round of the FIDE World Cup further demonstrated his growth as a world-class competitor.
Confirmed Candidates 2026 Contenders
With Praggnanandhaa’s qualification, seven of the eight spots for the Candidates 2026 are now confirmed: Anish Giri, Fabiano Caruana, Matthias Bluebaum, Javokhir Sindarov, Wei Yi, Andrey Esipenko, and Praggnanandhaa. The last position will be decided based on the highest six-month average rating from August 2025 to January 2026, provided the player meets the minimum game requirement.
India’s Rising Chess Influence
Praggnanandhaa will spearhead India’s representation on the men’s side, while Divya Deshmukh, Koneru Humpy, and R Vaishali compete in the Women’s Candidates. His qualification signals a new era for Indian chess, highlighting the country’s growing stature in elite international competitions.
