First Recorded Predation of Lightfoot Crab by Horn-Eyed Ghost Crab

A research team from GITAM School of Science, Visakhapatnam, has recorded the first confirmed case of a horn-eyed ghost crab preying on a mottled lightfoot crab along the Rushikonda shoreline. Observed during an evening field visit in April, this rare behavioural event offers fresh insights into species interactions along India’s eastern coast.

Unexpected Predator–Prey Interaction

During low tide, researchers observed unusual movement revealing a horn-eyed ghost crab actively feeding on a mottled lightfoot crab. While the prey typically resides in rocky crevices, the predator is usually found on sandy stretches. The encounter suggests a temporary overlap of habitats where sand and rock occur in close proximity.

Behavioural Implications and Ecological Importance

This observation points to a possible behavioural extension by the horn-eyed ghost crab, likely associated with nocturnal foraging. Such predation has not been previously documented along India’s coast, highlighting the flexibility of generalist predators that adjust their diet based on prey availability in varying habitats.

Ghost Crabs as Keystone Species

Ghost crabs, belonging to the genus Ocypode, are key species in sandy intertidal zones. They influence the distribution of smaller organisms and shape shorelines through their burrowing activities. Six Ocypode species are found along the Indian coast, with three—O. brevicornis, O. macrocera, and O. cordimanus present at Rushikonda.

Environmental Drivers and Future Research Needs

Researchers note that factors such as pollution, changes in sediment patterns, rising sea temperatures, and shifting tidal rhythms may encourage species to explore new microhabitats. Although this incident may be isolated, it raises important questions about ecosystem responses to environmental changes. The Visakhapatnam coastline, with its mix of sandy beaches and rocky shelves, presents a promising setting for future studies on transitional intertidal interactions.
