Narwhal: The Unicorn of the Sea

The narwhal is a mysterious Arctic whale often called the “unicorn of the sea” because of its long, spiral tusk. These whales live in cold northern waters, usually in small groups, and play an important role in the ocean’s ecosystem. Their unusual appearance has fascinated scientists and nature lovers for centuries.

The Famous Tusk

A narwhal’s tusk is actually an elongated tooth, not a horn, and can grow as long as 10 feet. Most males have one, while only a few females develop small tusks. Rarely, a narwhal may grow two. The tusk is highly sensitive, with millions of nerve endings that help the whale sense its surroundings.

Appearance and Diet

Narwhals change color as they grow: they are blue-grey at birth, darken to black as juveniles, and turn white as adults. They feed on fish, squid, and shrimp, swallowing their prey whole. Narwhals are strong divers and can reach depths of up to 1,500 meters while hunting.

Habitat and Behavior

Narwhals are mostly found in the Atlantic Arctic, with some in the Pacific. They migrate between deep icy waters in winter and coastal areas in summer. Small pods of 15–20 are common, but sometimes hundreds gather together.

Cultural and Ecological Role

Narwhals are top predators, helping maintain balance in their environment. They also serve as a food source for indigenous Arctic communities. In medieval times, their tusks were sold as “unicorn horns,” giving rise to their magical nickname.
