Description

IndiGo Airlines is today one of India’s most reliable and budget-friendly carriers, but its rise to the top began with a very modest start. Known for punctual flights, affordable fares, and a large modern fleet, the airline built its reputation by offering straightforward and dependable travel. To understand how it became India’s largest airline, it helps to look at its beginnings and the people who created it.

When Was IndiGo Airlines Started?

IndiGo was set up in 2005 as a private aviation venture with a clear vision: to make air travel simple, low-cost, and consistently on time for passengers across the country.

The airline received its first Airbus aircraft in July 2006 and began commercial operations on 4 August 2006, launching its first flight on the Delhi–Guwahati–Imphal route.

Who Founded IndiGo Airlines?

The airline was co-founded by Rahul Bhatia and Rakesh Gangwal, whose partnership blended business strength with deep aviation experience.

  • Rahul Bhatia:
From InterGlobe Enterprises, a major Indian travel and hospitality group headquartered in Gurgaon. He initially held the majority stake and played a crucial role in shaping IndiGo’s business model.

  • Rakesh Gangwal:
An Indian-origin aviation specialist based in the United States. His industry knowledge and global experience were key in designing IndiGo’s efficient, low-cost operations.

Together, they created a carrier focused on minimal frills, high efficiency, and punctuality.

IndiGo’s Early Journey and Rapid Growth

IndiGo expanded at an astonishing pace after entering the market:

  • 2007: Reached the 1-million-passenger mark

  • 2010: Became the third-largest airline in India

  • 2011: Started flying to international destinations

  • 2012: Claimed the No. 1 spot in domestic market share

  • 2014: Added its 100th aircraft

  • 2015: Launched its IPO

How IndiGo Expanded Over Time

Over the years, IndiGo steadily increased its fleet and network, adding new Indian cities as well as international destinations. By 2025, the airline was operating over 2,700 flights per day, connecting 94 cities in India and 43 destinations abroad.

Services Offered by IndiGo

IndiGo mostly provides economy-class travel but focuses on keeping the experience clean, simple, and comfortable. Its services include:

  • Buy-on-board food options (snacks, noodles, sandwiches, beverages)

  • Hello 6E in-flight magazine

  • Super 6E and 6E Upgrade, offering benefits like priority check-in, extra baggage, and better seats

  • IndiGoStretch (Business Class) introduced in 2024, offering wider seats, meals, and priority services

  • IndiGo CarGo, which uses A321 freighter aircraft to transport goods

A no-frills approach—such as not serving complimentary hot meals—helps the airline keep operational costs low and fares affordable.

Interesting Highlights About IndiGo
