Indian Navy Receives Taragiri, Fourth Nilgiri-Class Frigate Under Project 17A

The Indian Navy has inducted “Taragiri” (Yard 12653), the fourth frigate of the Nilgiri-class under Project 17A and the third to be built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. Delivered on 28 November 2025, the vessel strengthens India’s efforts to achieve greater self-reliance in designing and building modern warships. It also honours the legacy of the earlier INS Taragiri, a Leander-class frigate that served the Navy for over three decades.

Indigenous Design and Next-Generation Features

Conceptualised by the Warship Design Bureau and supervised by the Warship Overseeing Team, Project 17A ships represent a new generation of stealth frigates with improved survivability and advanced combat systems. “Taragiri” incorporates high-end automation and measures to minimise radar detectability, reflecting India’s push towards an Aatmanirbhar defence ecosystem.

Propulsion and Onboard Platforms

The frigate operates on a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion arrangement, blending diesel engines with gas turbines to drive controllable pitch propellers. Its Integrated Platform Management System enables centralised monitoring and control of major systems, enhancing operational effectiveness and damage-management capability.

Weapons and Sensors

Equipped with a significantly upgraded arsenal, “Taragiri” features BrahMos anti-ship missiles, the MFSTAR multifunction radar, the MRSAM air-defence system, a 76 mm Super Rapid Gun Mount, close-in weapon systems, and anti-submarine rockets and torpedoes. This suite allows the frigate to engage targets across air, surface and underwater domains with precision.

The delivery of four Project 17A vessels within 11 months underscores India’s increasing mastery over complex warship production. With three additional ships planned for delivery by August 2026, the project continues to boost employment and reinforce the domestic defence industry, further elevating India’s maritime capabilities.
