Description

Archaeologists in Japan have made a remarkable discovery beneath Lake Biwa: one of the oldest and most intact pottery vessels ever found, dating back over 10,000 years. Retrieved from the Tsuzuraozaki underwater ruins, this find is offering fresh insight into the early Jomon period and shedding new light on the craftsmanship of prehistoric Japan.

A Well-Preserved Vessel from the Depths

In October, researchers recovered a pottery vessel from a depth of 64 metres in Lake Biwa. Measuring 25 centimetres in height, the artefact dates to the early Jomon era and connects modern observers to Japan’s first settled communities. The lake’s environment has preserved the vessel exceptionally well, protecting it from natural decay over millennia. Tsuzuraozaki, explored initially in the 1920s, has long attracted attention for its submerged remains of ancient human activity.

Jomon Pottery and Early Japanese Society

This vessel belongs to the ancient Jomon pottery tradition, one of the earliest examples of ceramic production in human history. Emerging over 10,000 years ago, Jomon pottery coincided with a shift from nomadic life to more permanent settlements. Specialists suggest that the vessel may represent either the Jinguji-style or Konami Upper-layer tradition, known for its delicate patterns and elegant forms. Beyond daily utility, such pottery also held cultural and symbolic importance, reflecting the early inhabitants’ aesthetic and ritual sensibilities.

Modern Technology Unlocking Underwater Treasures

The discovery was made possible through advanced underwater technology. Scientists employed autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and 3D sonar mapping to survey the lakebed in detail. Originally developed for marine engineering, these tools now allow archaeologists to explore deep, previously inaccessible sites. Robotics, AI, and sonar imaging are becoming vital for studying submerged heritage with accuracy and safety.

The Ongoing Mystery of Tsuzuraozaki

Despite decades of research, the purpose of the Tsuzuraozaki site remains unclear. Since 1924, more than 200 pottery fragments have been found, yet the reason for their deposition is still debated. Some researchers suggest the site was once a lakeside settlement that became submerged due to rising water levels or tectonic activity. Others propose a ceremonial function, pointing to the upright placement of the vessel. Continued study of Tsuzuraozaki promises to reveal how early Jomon communities lived, worked, and observed their cultural rituals along ancient Lake Biwa.
