Description
At the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), cinema that explores unconventional stories and underrepresented voices took centre stage. Among the celebrated films, the Vietnamese feature “Skin of Youth” won the Golden Peacock for Best Film, earning recognition for its compelling storytelling and rich emotional depth.
A Journey Through Lives Less Seen
Set in Saigon during the 1990s, Skin of Youth follows San, a transgender individual preparing for gender-affirming surgery, and Nam, a cage fighter raising his young son. Their worlds collide in a narrative filled with resilience, love, and the struggles of those living on society’s margins. The film is praised for portraying complex human emotions with sensitivity and authenticity, accompanied by visually striking scenes.
Behind the Story
Director Ashleigh Mayfair explained that the film draws inspiration from her transgender sibling, giving the story a deeply personal layer. Festival jurors noted the film’s originality, its ability to engage audiences immediately, and its fearless exploration of identity, dignity, and personal sacrifice.
Honouring Global Filmmakers and Performers
The festival also spotlighted other notable works. The Norwegian film “Safe House” received the ICFT–UNESCO Gandhi Medal for advancing intercultural understanding and peace. The Best Debut Director Award was shared by Iranian filmmaker Hesam Farahmand (My Daughter’s Hair – Raha) and Estonian filmmaker Tonis Pill (Frank). Actors Ubeimar Rios and Jara Sofija Ostan earned Silver Peacock awards for their remarkable performances.
IFFI also paid tribute to iconic figures from Indian cinema, featured folk performances from northeastern India, and marked significant anniversaries. By celebrating both established and emerging talent, the festival reinforced the role of cinema as a bridge across cultures, a preserver of tradition, and a source of inspiration for audiences worldwide.
