Description
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the films eligible for its 98th awards ceremony, spotlighting a range of stories from animated adventures to documentaries and international cinema. This year’s lineup reflects a truly global perspective on filmmaking.
Animation That Captivates Audiences
Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters emerges as one of the most talked-about animated films, thanks to its limited U.S. theater screenings. Other animated titles gaining attention include Disney’s Elio and Zootopia 2, Neon’s Arco, GKids’ Little Amelie or the Character of Rain, Japan’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, and India’s Mahavatar Narsimha. Some previously anticipated films, like China’s Ne Zha 2, did not meet the eligibility requirements.
Documentaries Making Their Mark
The documentary field has reached a historic high with 201 films entering the race. On 16 December, a shortlist of 15 films will be selected, eventually narrowing to five official nominees. The submissions cover investigative journalism, cultural explorations, and historical narratives, ensuring the category will be highly competitive.
A Global Perspective in International Features
The Best International Feature category includes 86 films from countries around the world. Highlights include India’s Homebound, Norway’s Sentimental Value, Spain’s Sirat, Brazil’s The Secret Agent, and Tunisia’s The Voice of Hind Rajab. Some films, such as 2000 Meters to Andriivka, are eligible in multiple categories, including documentary and international, reflecting the crossover appeal of certain projects.
Looking Ahead
All eyes are on the nominations announcement on 22 January. KPop Demon Hunters is widely expected to be a strong contender, and its song Golden is also in the running for Best Original Song. Winners will be celebrated during the live 98th Academy Awards ceremony on 15 March, concluding a season full of creative excellence.
