China Begins Building Nuclear-Resistant Floating Island for Deep-Sea Research by 2028

China has begun constructing a massive mobile floating artificial island, designed for long-term deep-sea research and strategic presence. Expected to be operational by 2028, the project has garnered global attention due to its nuclear-resistant design, large carrying capacity, and potential geopolitical implications in the South China Sea.

Design and Technical Features

The platform, officially named the Deep-Sea All-Weather Resident Floating Research Facility, will weigh approximately 78,000 tonnes. It features a semi-submersible twin-hull design and is intended to host 238 personnel for up to four months without resupply. Measuring 138 metres long and 85 metres wide, with a deck height of 45 metres above sea level, the facility is built to operate in extreme ocean conditions, including tropical cyclones.

Advanced Materials and Nuclear Resilience

A notable feature of the island is its reported ability to withstand nuclear blasts. Engineers are employing a microscopic lattice of folded metal tubes arranged in precise geometric patterns to enhance shock absorption. This material compresses under intense pressure, increasing its density and strength, functioning as a high-resilience, energy-dissipating structure. The platform will also include emergency power systems, secure communications, and stabilised navigation.

Although China presents the project as a purely scientific initiative, its intended deployment in the contested waters of the South China Sea has raised concerns. Its extended endurance surpasses that of many conventional naval vessels, allowing a sustained presence in remote maritime areas. Analysts suggest it could serve as a versatile asset—part research facility, part strategic platform—capable of supporting surveillance, logistics, and forward operations while maintaining a civilian status.
