The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the full roster of films eligible for the 98th Academy Awards in three major categories Best Animated Feature, Best Documentary Feature, and Best International Feature Film. This year’s list highlights an impressive global lineup featuring streaming favourites, major studio animations and critically praised international entries.

Best Animated Feature: Strong Global Lineup

Leading the field of 35 qualifying animated films is Netflix’s widely popular “KPop Demon Hunters”, which met eligibility rules through a targeted theatrical release in key U.S. cities. Other prominent contenders include Disney’s upcoming titles “Elio” and “Zootopia 2,” Neon’s “Arco,” GKids’ adaptation “Little Amelie or the Character of Rain,” Japan’s highly anticipated “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle,” and India’s hit animated feature “Mahavatar Narsimha.”

One surprising omission from this year’s list is China’s big-budget sequel “Ne Zha 2.”

Record-Breaking Submissions For Documentary Feature

The documentary feature category has witnessed an overwhelming response, receiving 201 submissions, the highest number among all Oscar categories this year. Members of the documentary branch will cast votes to create a 15-title shortlist on December 16, which will later be trimmed down to five nominees. The competition is expected to be intense, with a mix of investigative, cultural and historical documentaries attracting attention.

Best International Feature: A Diverse Collection

A total of 86 films from around the world have been approved for consideration in the International Feature category. Noteworthy selections include India’s “Homebound,” Norway’s “Sentimental Value,” Spain’s “Sirat,” Brazil’s “The Secret Agent,” and Tunisia’s “The Voice of Hind Rajab.”
Some films, such as the co-produced “2000 Meters to Andriivka,” are competing in both the international and documentary categories.

Excitement Builds Ahead Of Official Nominations

All eyes are now on whether “KPop Demon Hunters” considered one of the standout contenders will secure a nomination when the Academy announces its final list on January 22. The film’s original track “Golden” is also competing for a spot in the Best Original Song category.

The winners will be revealed at the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, bringing the curtain down on an exceptionally competitive awards season.
