Description
Kolkata is set to once again welcome poets from across the world as the eighth edition of Chair Poetry Evenings returns from 28 to 30 November 2025. Over the years, the festival has strengthened the city’s image as a vibrant hub of literary and cultural dialogue, bringing together voices from a wide range of poetic traditions.
Global Guests And a Multilingual Canvas
This year’s festival will see poets representing thirteen countries, sharing their work in sixteen different languages—a testament to its deep commitment to cultural inclusivity. The line-up includes renowned international names such as Susan Rich, Simon Armitage, Mona Arshi, Madara Gruntmane, and Peter Verhelst, along with several celebrated Indian poets. Their collective presence underscores the event’s focus on meaningful cross-cultural exchange.
Venues And Festival Highlights
The festival will open at the Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad auditorium, followed by interactive readings and discussions at Cloud Tavern, located inside the Samilton Hotel. The signature closing event, “Poetry on the Cruise,” will once again take poetry to the waters of the River Hooghly, offering an unforgettable setting for performances. The inaugural evening will also present a folk and fusion music showcase, adding a musical flourish to the literary celebrations.
Book Launches And Cultural Collaborations
Two newly translated poetry collections are scheduled to be unveiled during the festival, further enriching its contribution to contemporary global poetry. The event is backed by an array of cultural bodies from literary foundations to embassies and institutions across Europe and Latin America reflecting its expanding international footprint.
The festival’s directors highlight poetry’s enduring ability to inspire resistance, compassion and introspection. At a time when global uncertainties continue to impact artistic spaces, Chair Poetry Evenings aims to reaffirm Kolkata’s stature as a cultural lighthouse—one where creativity, dialogue and imagination can thrive despite the challenges.
