Description

In a landmark development for clean energy in India, the country has unveiled its first megawatt-hour Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB). The 3 MWh battery system was inaugurated on November 11, 2025, at NTPC NETRA in Greater Noida, NTPC’s research and development center. The ceremony was led by Shri Manohar Lal, Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, and attended by senior officials including Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power), and Shri Gurdeep Singh, CMD, NTPC.

This battery is designed for long-duration energy storage, addressing a key challenge in integrating renewable energy sources such as solar and wind into the grid. By storing electricity over extended periods, the system ensures a consistent and reliable power supply, even when renewable generation fluctuates.

How Vanadium Flow Batteries Work

Vanadium redox flow batteries differ from conventional lithium-ion batteries. They use vanadium ions in different chemical states to store and release energy, allowing for longer storage times.

Key advantages of VRFBs include:

  • Safety: Non-flammable and stable

  • Durability: Long lifespan with thousands of cycles

  • Scalability: Energy capacity and power output can be expanded independently

By developing this technology domestically, India can reduce reliance on imported lithium and rare-earth metals, boosting the country’s technological self-reliance in energy storage.

Supporting India’s Renewable Goals

The launch of the VRFB aligns with India’s goal to expand renewable energy while maintaining grid stability and energy security. The system complements initiatives like the National Green Hydrogen Mission and India’s broader commitment to carbon neutrality.

Shri Manohar Lal praised the NTPC NETRA team for their innovative solutions and emphasized the need for continued advancement in green hydrogen, carbon capture, and waste-to-energy technologies.

Innovations On Display At NTPC NETRA

During his visit, the minister also observed several other cutting-edge projects:

  • Green Hydrogen Mobility Plant

  • Water-based Green Hydrogen Plant

  • High-Temperature Steam Electrolyzer using Solid Oxide Technology

  • Municipal Solid Waste-RDF Gasification Plant

  • AC Microgrid integrating 4 MWp Solar with 1 MWh Lithium-NMC Battery

These initiatives showcase NTPC’s commitment to research, innovation, and building a low-carbon future for India’s power sector.

Event Highlights

  • Date: November 11, 2025

  • Location: NTPC NETRA, Greater Noida

  • Battery Type: Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB)

  • Capacity: 3 MWh

  • Inaugurated By: Shri Manohar Lal, Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs

  • Purpose: Long-duration energy storage for renewable integration

  • Other Technologies at NETRA: Green hydrogen, carbon capture, waste-to-energy, microgrids

  • Significance: India’s first MWh-scale VRFB, enhancing grid stability and supporting the country’s energy transition

With this milestone, India strengthens its position in energy storage innovation and moves closer to a sustainable, self-reliant energy future.
