Mandale Depot Inaugurated as Asia’s Largest Facility for Mumbai Metro Line 2B

Mumbai has taken a major step forward in its public transport expansion with the launch of the Mandale Depot for Metro Line 2B. This newly inaugurated elevated depot is now Asia’s largest metro facility, built to boost operational efficiency and enhance connectivity between the city’s eastern and western stretches.

A Mega Infrastructure Built For Future

Spread across 30.45 hectares, the Mandale Depot has the capacity to house 72 eight-coach metro trains. The double-level car shed is designed to hold 36 trains on each level, ensuring smoother operations on the DN Nagar–Mandale section one of the routes expected to significantly reduce traffic load and improve daily commuting comfort.

Advanced Tracks And High-Capacity Stabling

The depot is supported by an extensive 29 km internal track network, enabling seamless train movement within the premises. Its double-decker stabling system maximises land utilisation, while three elevated viaducts ensure quick, organised circulation of trains for stabling, cleaning, inspection, and daily deployment.

Modern Inspection & Maintenance Hub

To keep the fleet in peak condition, the facility is equipped with cutting-edge maintenance infrastructure. It features:

• 10 maintenance bays

• 6 inspection tracks

• 4 bogie turntables

Heavy-duty tools and storage systems allow technical teams to perform major repairs and servicing efficiently—without affecting the day-to-day running of metro services.

Smart Systems, Green Features & Project Progress

Daily cleaning is handled through automated wash plants, and routine wheel servicing is performed using a pit wheel lathe. A G+3 operations control centre oversees metro activities 24/7.

Environmental safeguards have also been prioritised, including:

• 175 KLD water recycling system

• Underground utility layout

• Dust-suppression mechanisms

Meanwhile, trial runs have already begun on the Mandale–Diamond Garden stretch of Line 2B. Full commissioning of the entire corridor is expected between mid-2026 and late-2027.
