Description
Deep within the lush forests of India’s Western Ghats dwells the Malabar gliding frog, a striking amphibian renowned for its vivid green colour, gliding ability, and unusual method of reproduction. Rather than depositing its eggs in water, this species constructs a foam nest suspended above ponds and streams, a remarkable adaptation that enhances the survival of its offspring in the treetop environment.
Adapted For Life Among Trees
Perfectly suited for life in the canopy, the Malabar gliding frog uses the webbing between its toes to leap and glide between branches. This aerial agility allows it to evade predators, locate partners during the breeding season, and access nesting spots perched above water surfaces.
Ingenious Foam Nesting Ritual
As the monsoon rains begin, the species engages in a distinctive breeding process. The female selects a leaf or branch overhanging a pond, while the male clasps her in the amplexus position. Together, they produce a white, foamy nest about three inches wide, which houses up to 200 eggs. This froth shields the developing embryos from predators, desiccation, and sunlight—acting as a natural protective incubator suspended above the water.
Tadpoles’ Journey To Water
When the eggs hatch, the tadpoles slide from the foam nest and drop safely into the pond below. The elevated location ensures a smooth, gravity-assisted descent into the aquatic environment, where they grow and eventually metamorphose into young frogs ready to climb back into the trees.
A Symbol Of Ecological Balance
The Malabar gliding frog serves as a vital indicator of forest and freshwater health in the Western Ghats. Its dependence on unpolluted water and dense vegetation reflects the condition of the ecosystem. However, increasing threats from deforestation, pollution, and habitat fragmentation endanger its population. Safeguarding this species is essential for preserving the biodiversity of one of India’s most ecologically rich and sensitive regions.
