Description

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati) have created a groundbreaking material capable of detecting kerosene adulteration in petrol while also cleaning oil spills from water bodies. The innovative substance, known as a Phase-Selective Organogelator (PSOG), offers a cost-effective and eco-friendly approach to ensuring fuel purity and protecting the environment.

Dual-Purpose Breakthrough

The newly developed PSOG can both identify kerosene contamination in petrol—a widespread and hazardous issue—and absorb oil from water surfaces by turning it into a removable gel. This dual-action property makes it a valuable tool for monitoring fuel quality as well as for cleaning up marine or industrial oil spills. Once the oil is absorbed, the PSOG converts it into a solid gel that can be easily collected, leaving the water surface clean and residue-free.

Scientific Basis Of PSOG

The innovation was led by Professor Gopal Das and his team from the Department of Chemistry at IIT Guwahati, including researchers Rubi Moral and Oiyao Appun Pegu. The PSOG is produced using a process called hierarchical supramolecular self-assembly, which mimics natural molecular arrangements, such as those seen in soap bubbles. This method allows the material to selectively trap specific oils like kerosene and diesel, forming gels only when those oil types are present. This high selectivity makes it highly effective for both fuel adulteration detection and environmental cleanup.

Environmental And Safety Significance

Oil spills are among the most severe environmental disasters, damaging marine ecosystems and threatening coastal economies. According to the Oil Tanker Spill Statistics 2024, approximately 10,000 tonnes of oil were released into global waters last year. Traditional clean-up techniques often involve toxic agents or are financially unsustainable. IIT Guwahati’s PSOG offers a sustainable and chemical-free alternative, reducing secondary pollution. Additionally, it can help detect adulterated petrol at fuel stations or in domestic use, enhancing combustion safety and preventing accidents.

Future Applications And Prospects

The research team plans to improve the PSOG’s design to identify more fuel adulterants and to make it suitable for diverse environmental conditions. They aim to scale the technology for industrial and environmental applications, including use in refineries, petrol pumps, and large-scale ocean cleanup projects. According to Prof. Das, this development showcases how advanced chemistry can offer practical, scalable solutions to critical global issues related to energy safety and environmental sustainability.
