Description

In a historic development for Indian football, 32-year-old winger Ryan Williams has officially become an Indian citizen, giving up his Australian passport to don the national colors. His choice, deeply rooted in a lifelong connection to Mumbai and Indian football, symbolizes a heartfelt return to his maternal heritage.

A football journey across continents

Born to an Indian mother and an Australian father, Williams spent his formative years in Mumbai before moving to Australia. He began his professional career with Perth Glory and later played for clubs in both England and Australia. Eventually, he joined Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League (ISL), where his remarkable start scoring three goals in as many matches—has quickly established him as one of the season’s brightest talents and a fresh addition to the Indian national team.

A family legacy Intertwined With Indian Football

Football runs in Williams’ blood. His grandfather, Lincoln Eric Grostate, was a celebrated player who represented Central Railway SC, the Tatas club, and Bombay, famously defeating a Bengal team featuring nine internationals. Williams’ mother hails from an Anglo-Indian family in Mumbai, and her father’s stories of Santosh Trophy glory inspired Williams to reconnect with his roots. Football talent is a family trait: his brothers, Aryn and Rhys, are professional players, with Rhys even earning caps in the English Premier League for Australia.

The path to Indian citizenship

Becoming an Indian citizen was no small feat. The process required a year of residency, extensive documentation, and numerous official procedures. Surrendering his Australian passport was an emotional experience for Williams, but he felt it was a decision that made sense: “When something feels right, you have to go for it. The positives outweighed everything else.” Honoring his grandfather’s last wish to play for India served as his guiding motivation throughout the journey. “It feels like things have come full circle,” he shared.

A new chapter in Indian football

Williams’ inclusion in the national camp, under coach Khalid Jamil, represents a landmark moment in India’s ongoing effort to expand its talent pool globally. Speaking about his upcoming debut, he said, “When I put on the India jersey, I’ll give everything for the country and the fans.” Fit, focused, and more determined than ever, Williams hopes his decision inspires other players of Indian origin to consider representing India: “We have to show others that it’s possible to play for India and help push the country forward.”

Ryan Williams’ story is more than a career move it is a journey of heritage, ambition, and patriotism, redefining what it means to play for India on the global stage.
