IN-SPACe and SIDBI Launch ₹1,000 Crore Venture Capital Fund to Boost India’s Private Space Sector

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has partnered with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to establish a Rs 1,000 crore Venture Capital Fund aimed at accelerating the growth of India’s private space ecosystem. The fund is designed to foster innovation, strengthen indigenous capabilities, and support the scaling up of emerging enterprises in the rapidly evolving space sector.

Formal Launch And Regulatory Clearance

The operational agreement for the fund was signed by Lochan Sehra, IAS, Joint Secretary of IN-SPACe, and Arup Kumar, Managing Director and CEO of SIDBI Venture Capital Limited (SVCL)—a fully owned subsidiary of SIDBI. The move follows the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI)’s approval and signals the start of investment operations. Initially sanctioned by the Union Cabinet in October 2024, the initiative appoints SIDBI as the official fund manager.

Investment Scope And Strategic Focus

The fund will channel early-stage and growth investments into startups engaged in diverse domains such as satellite production, launch vehicle design, in-space services, communication networks, earth observation, and data analytics. By supporting ventures across the entire value chain, the programme aims to boost entrepreneurship and draw private investments into a field historically driven by public institutions.

Partnership Goals And National Vision

According to IN-SPACe, this collaboration represents a critical step toward realising the government’s goal of building an inclusive and competitive space economy. “The fund will act as a catalyst for India’s private space enterprises,” said Lochan Sehra, Joint Secretary of IN-SPACe. He emphasised that the initiative will provide startups with essential financial backing to develop indigenous technologies and globally viable space products.

Arup Kumar, CEO of SIDBI, described the space sector as a vital area for national innovation and industrial advancement. He added that the fund would motivate entrepreneurs to engage in cutting-edge research, promote indigenous manufacturing, and enhance India’s status as a global space technology hub. The collaboration aligns with the objectives of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ mission, seeking to create a self-reliant and dynamic private space industry.
