GRI and UN Unveil Integrity Matters Checklist for Credible Corporate Climate Reporting

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has introduced a new tool, endorsed by the United Nations, to strengthen transparency and accountability in corporate climate commitments. Known as the Integrity Matters Checklist, the tool helps companies and investors align their climate reporting with the UN’s standards for credible net-zero targets and transition plans. It reinforces the private sector’s crucial role in achieving the Paris Agreement objectives and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Operationalising UN Climate Integrity Framework

Developed collaboratively with the UN, the Integrity Matters Checklist translates recommendations from the UN High-Level Expert Group (HLEG) on Net Zero Commitments outlined in its influential “Integrity Matters” report into practical reporting steps under GRI’s sustainability framework. The tool provides detailed guidance for organisations on reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, fossil fuel reduction strategies, and transition plans. It also integrates the concept of a just transition, ensuring that climate actions support social equity and fair economic change.

Integration With GRI’s Updated Climate Standard

The new checklist complements GRI’s recently revised “GRI 102: Climate Change 2025 Standard”, ensuring corporate climate disclosures align with the UN’s integrity framework. GRI CEO Robin Hodess highlighted that effective climate reporting delivers “decision-useful data” and enables companies to demonstrate integrity by aligning their commitments with measurable outcomes. The tool’s launch comes as nations and corporations prepare for COP30 in Belém, Brazil, amid rising global demands for credible climate action from the private sector.

UN Leaders Endorse Greater Transparency

UN Assistant Secretary-General for Climate Change Selwin Hart described the checklist as a “bridge between ambition and transparency,” underscoring that genuine net-zero targets must be both measurable and equitable. Catherine McKenna, Chair of the UN HLEG, noted that while corporate climate pledges are increasing, consistency and accountability remain weak. She added that the checklist provides a clear, transparent process for verifying the integrity of corporate commitments.

Strengthening Private Sector’s Climate Role

Sanda Ojiambo, CEO of the UN Global Compact, said the initiative will enhance business credibility and accountability in the climate transition. Helena Viñes Fiestas of the UN-PRI Taskforce on Net Zero Policy added that by converting integrity principles into practical action, the tool supports companies in achieving science-based, verifiable progress. The checklist is expected to gain broad adoption as firms adapt to tighter global disclosure norms and prepare for heightened scrutiny ahead of COP30.
