North 24 Parganas in West Bengal has officially emerged as the most populated district in India, surpassing Thane in Maharashtra, as per the latest 2025 demographic estimates. With an estimated population of around 10.9 million and a density of 2,469 people per square kilometre, the district is now counted among the most densely populated regions in the world.

Rise Of North 24 Parganas

Part of the Kolkata Metropolitan Region, North 24 Parganas has witnessed steady population growth due to rapid urbanisation and strong economic ties with Kolkata. The district encompasses key urban areas such as Salt Lake, Rajarhat, Barasat, and Barrackpore all of which have seen major development over the past two decades. Affordable housing, access to jobs in the IT and services sectors, and improved connectivity have drawn people from across eastern India.

Population growth in the area first spiked after the Partition of India in 1947, when a large number of refugees from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) settled here. In 1986, North 24 Parganas was carved out of the larger 24 Parganas district, forming its current administrative boundaries.

Thane’s Split And Changing Rankings

Until recently, Thane district in Maharashtra held the title of India’s most populous district, with 11.06 million people recorded in the 2011 Census. However, after Thane was divided in 2014 to create Palghar district, its population dropped to about 8.07 million, allowing North 24 Parganas to take the lead. Other major population centres now include Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai Suburban, each ranging between 9 to 9.6 million residents.

Economic And Infrastructure Growth

North 24 Parganas has become an economic hotspot, housing over 1,500 IT companies and providing employment to nearly 3.5 lakh professionals, especially in Salt Lake and New Town. The district’s growing metro network, new roadways, and housing projects have further enhanced its appeal.

In addition to its urban centres, the district maintains a robust agricultural and fisheries base, with several villages gradually transforming into semi-urban communities amid industrial development.
