Description

Typhoon Kalmaegi has unleashed catastrophic damage across the central Philippines and is now advancing toward Vietnam’s coastline after rapidly strengthening over the South China Sea. The storm Asia’s deadliest this year has claimed at least 114 lives, flooded major cities, and displaced thousands, leaving communities struggling to recover from widespread destruction.

Philippines Reels From Massive Losses

The hardest-hit area was Cebu province, where rivers overflowed and residential zones were reduced to debris. Along the Mananga River, entire neighbourhoods were flattened, and roads were filled with overturned vehicles and thick mud. In Talisay and Cebu City, flash floods swept away houses, forcing residents to climb onto rooftops and seek refuge in schools converted into temporary shelters. The government has declared a national state of calamity, enabling emergency funds and coordinated relief efforts. This disaster follows closely on the heels of a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that had already strained local emergency resources.

Factors Behind Kalmaegi’s Destructive Impact

Although Kalmaegi made landfall as a Category 2 equivalent storm, its slow movement caused sustained, torrential rainfall over heavily populated areas. Cebu’s mountainous terrain channelled runoff into flood-prone zones, overwhelming drainage systems and triggering flash floods that accounted for most fatalities. Experts emphasized that while storm winds capture attention, it is often water — from rainfall, storm surges, and river floods that causes the majority of deaths in tropical cyclones.

Vietnam On High Alert For Category 4 Landfall

Over open seas, Kalmaegi rapidly intensified to a Category 4-equivalent typhoon, packing winds of up to 215 km/h. Forecasters predict landfall along Vietnam’s central coast late Thursday, with provinces such as Danang, Quang Ngai, and Dak Lak bracing for high winds, storm surges, and intense rainfall. Authorities have launched extensive evacuation operations, with around 350,000 residents expected to be relocated in Gia Lai province alone. The impending strike comes as the region continues recovering from severe floods that submerged Hoi An a UNESCO World Heritage site and damaged infrastructure and power lines.

Meanwhile, another system, Tropical Storm Fung-Wong (Uwan), is forming nearby and could intensify later this week, threatening northern Luzon in the Philippines with further heavy rain and flooding.
