Description
Guru Nanak Dev Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab, is one of the most significant festivals in Sikhism, marking the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the faith. In 2025, this sacred occasion will be celebrated on November 5, which coincides with the Kartik Purnima (full moon day) as per the Hindu lunar calendar. The festival embodies the values of peace, equality, and devotion, reflecting Guru Nanak’s timeless teachings.
Spiritual Significance
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 in Rai Bhoi Ki Talwandi, now known as Nankana Sahib (Pakistan). His divine message of “Ik Onkar” meaning “There is only one God” emphasized unity, compassion, and equality among all. His philosophy and spiritual insights laid the foundation of Sikhism and continue to inspire millions across the world.
Rituals And Celebrations
The festivities usually commence two days before the main day with the Akhand Path, a 48-hour continuous recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism. Devotees also take part in Prabhat Pheris, early morning devotional processions that pass through nearby localities singing hymns.
On the eve of the Jayanti, a grand Nagar Kirtan is carried out, led by the Panj Pyare (the Five Beloved Ones). The procession features spiritual songs, traditional Gatka (Sikh martial arts) performances, and beautifully decorated floats carrying the Nishan Sahib (Sikh religious flag).
Customs At Gurdwaras
On Guru Nanak Jayanti, gurdwaras are illuminated with lamps, lights, and flowers. Devotees gather for kirtans (devotional songs) and discourses from the Guru Granth Sahib. The highlight of the celebration is the Langar, a free community meal open to everyone, symbolizing Guru Nanak’s teachings of humility, equality, and selfless service. Prayer services and devotional music continue throughout the day and night.
Public Observance
Guru Nanak Jayanti is a public holiday in India and is celebrated with great devotion, especially in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and across Sikh communities worldwide. Major gurdwaras like the Golden Temple (Amritsar) and Nankana Sahib (Pakistan) host grand events, drawing pilgrims and devotees from around the globe to pay tribute to Guru Nanak’s enduring spiritual legacy.
