Description

Mumbai, November 2025 India’s rising star Shafali Verma etched her name into cricketing history at the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup final in Mumbai, becoming the youngest player across both men’s and women’s formats to score a half-century in a World Cup final. The 21-year-old all-rounder’s explosive performance powered India to an imposing total of 298/7 against South Africa at the DY Patil Stadium, the second-highest score ever recorded in a Women’s World Cup final.

Record-Breaking Brilliance At DY Patil

Opening the innings with Smriti Mandhana, Shafali launched into the South African attack with confidence and aggression, smashing 87 runs off 78 balls, studded with seven boundaries and two

towering sixes. The duo stitched together a commanding 104-run opening partnership, laying a rock-solid foundation for India.

With this feat, Shafali broke Virender Sehwag’s 2003 record, becoming the youngest cricketer in history to score a fifty in a World Cup final — men’s or women’s. She also surpassed Jessica Duffin’s 2013 women’s record, achieving this milestone at just 21 years and 278 days.

All-Round Show Of Class

While her batting performance stole the limelight, Shafali’s impact with the ball was equally impressive. Brought into the attack late in the game, she struck twice within seven deliveries—first dismissing Sune Luus with a sharp caught-and-bowled effort, and then sending Marizanne Kapp back with a thin edge to wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh. Her dual strike shifted the momentum firmly in India’s favour and showcased her versatility as an all-rounder.

Breaking Records and Barriers

Shafali now leads the list of youngest players to score a half-century in a World Cup final, ahead of Jessica Duffin (23 years, 235 days), Nat Sciver-Brunt (24 years, 337 days), and Virender Sehwag (24 years, 154 days). Often compared to Sehwag for her fearless stroke play, this innings saw her go one step further — breaking his record with poise and maturity well beyond her years.

Quick Exam-Oriented Facts

  • Score: 87 runs off 78 balls (7 fours, 2 sixes)

  • Age Record: Youngest player (21 years, 278 days) to score a fifty in any World Cup final

  • Bowling Impact: 2 wickets – Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp

  • Team Total: India scored 298/7, the second-highest in Women’s World Cup final history

A Landmark For Indian Women’s Cricket

Shafali Verma’s all-round heroics marked a defining moment for Indian women’s cricket. Her fearless batting and game-changing bowling spell encapsulated India’s new brand of aggression and self-belief. This performance not only helped India dominate the grand finale but also signaled the arrival of a new leader in the next generation of Indian cricketing icons.
