In a historic announcement made on November 1, 2025, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan declared that Kerala has completely eradicated extreme poverty, becoming the first state in India to achieve this remarkable milestone. The declaration, made in the State Assembly on Kerala Formation Day, marks the successful completion of a four-year mission launched soon after the government took office in 2021.

Addressing the Assembly under Rule 300, Chief Minister Vijayan described the achievement as a “new dawn” for Kerala, symbolising the state’s progress toward social justice and inclusive growth. Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. B. Rajesh hailed the announcement, noting that Kerala is now not only the first state in India, but also the second region in the world after China, to declare itself free from extreme poverty.

He criticised the Opposition for boycotting the Assembly session on such a significant day.
