The 31st Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF), themed “Where Cinema Connects the World,” is set to captivate audiences from 6 to 13 November 2025. The festival will once again turn Kolkata into a vibrant hub for filmmakers, artists, and movie lovers, offering a week-long celebration of Indian and international cinema through screenings, retrospectives, and special tributes.

Inaugural Event And Kolkata’s Cinematic Pulse

The grand opening ceremony will take place at the Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium, marking the official start of the festival. Ahead of the event, a press conference featuring Prasenjit Chatterjee, Koel Mallick, and June Malia showcased the city’s timeless connection with cinema. Prasenjit reminisced about how cinema once united communities through shared experiences in movie halls, while Koel fondly described KIFF as “a festival that extends Kolkata’s festive season beyond Durga Puja and Kali Puja.”

Festival Highlights And Opening Film

This year’s edition will begin with a special screening of the Bengali classic “Saptapadi” (1961) — a fitting tribute to Kolkata’s cinematic heritage and its deep emotional bond with Bengali cinema. The Focus Country for 2025 is Poland, featuring 19 acclaimed Polish films that highlight the country’s diverse storytelling traditions. Another major attraction, the “Unheard India” segment, will present eight rare films in lesser-known Indian languages, celebrating the nation’s linguistic and cultural diversity.

Tributes And Centenary Celebrations

A special Centenary Tribute will honor the legendary filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak, whose profound impact on world cinema continues to inspire generations. Additionally, the festival will pay homage to international icons Richard Burton and Robert Redford, as well as Indian filmmakers Raja Mitra, Shashi Anand, and Arun Roy for their invaluable contributions to the art of filmmaking.

Competitions And Global Participation

KIFF 2025 will host an exciting lineup of competition categories, including the International Competition, Indian Panorama, Bengali Panorama, and Indian Short Films. With entries from over 39 countries, the festival promises a rich mix of feature films, short films, and documentaries.
