USCIS Ends Cheque and Money Order Payments, Shifts to Digital System via Form G-1650

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has officially discontinued the use of cheques and money orders for immigration-related payments. Starting this week, all applicants are required to pay fees electronically through Form G-1650, which enables direct debit from a US bank account. The decision aligns with USCIS’s ongoing efforts to enhance payment security, reduce fraud, and accelerate processing through a fully digital system.

Transition To A Digital Payment Model

Under the new procedure, applicants must authorise USCIS to withdraw fees directly from their US bank accounts using Form G-1650 (Authorization for Direct Debit Transactions). USCIS spokesperson Matthew J. Tragesser stated that the change was prompted by frequent delays and fraud risks associated with paper-based transactions, as more than 90% of previous payments were made via cheques or money orders. The updated system is expected to streamline processing, minimise administrative workload, and improve transparency in tracking payments.

Credit Card Payments For Certain Categories

Employers filing under the H-1B visa programme or other employment-based immigration categories can continue using credit card payments through Form G-1450. This option also remains available for applications related to green cards, travel permits, and work authorisations. Immigration lawyers have noted that the move could benefit large corporations by simplifying internal accounting and reducing clerical errors, although it will require tighter coordination between HR and finance departments.

Challenges For Students And New Visa Holders

The policy shift may create temporary challenges for international students (F-1 visa holders) and newly arrived immigrants who do not yet possess US bank accounts. Since the electronic debit process requires valid account and routing numbers, incomplete or incorrect details could result in payment rejections. USCIS advises such applicants to verify their banking information carefully. Those without US accounts may use prepaid or reloadable credit cards, provided they comply with federal payment regulations.

Immigration experts recommend that global applicants plan early by opening US bank accounts or confirming payment authorisations before submitting their applications.
