Description
Thailand is in deep mourning following the death of Queen Mother Sirikit, beloved widow of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who passed away in Bangkok at the age of 93. The Royal Household Bureau confirmed that she succumbed to complications from a blood infection after being under intensive medical care since October 17. Her passing marks the close of a historic chapter in the Thai monarchy, where she served as a symbol of compassion, grace, and national unity for over seven decades.
A Lifetime Devoted To Thai People
Revered as the “Mother of the Nation,” Queen Sirikit dedicated her life to improving the welfare of her people. She championed countless humanitarian and social development projects, particularly focused on reducing rural poverty and empowering women. Her tireless efforts to preserve traditional Thai crafts especially silk weaving and handicrafts helped generate sustainable livelihoods in rural areas. In recognition of her nurturing spirit, August 12, her birthday, is celebrated nationwide as Mother’s Day in Thailand.
Early Life And Royal Journey
Born on August 12, 1932, in Bangkok, Sirikit Kitiyakara came from an aristocratic lineage and received her education both in Thailand and Europe. During her time in Paris, she met the young King Bhumibol Adulyadej, a meeting that blossomed into a lifelong partnership. After a car accident left the king injured, Sirikit moved to Switzerland to care for him, deepening their bond. The couple married in 1950, coinciding with the king’s coronation, and together they pledged to rule with love and devotion to their people. They had four children, including the current monarch, King Maha Vajiralongkorn.
Guardian of Culture, Nature, and Tradition
Queen Sirikit’s deep commitment to Thai heritage led her to establish the SUPPORT Foundation in 1976, aimed at preserving traditional crafts and uplifting artisans through training in weaving, embroidery, and jewelry-making. Her vision extended beyond cultural preservation to environmental stewardship. Projects such as “Forest Loves Water” and “Little House in the Forest” showcased her belief in sustainable living and harmony between humans and nature. Affectionately known as the “Green Queen,” she personally visited rural communities, embodying humility and empathy that endeared her to millions.
Queen Mother Sirikit leaves behind a legacy rooted in service, compassion, and cultural pride—a legacy that continues to inspire generations of Thais to cherish their traditions while building a better future.
