Description

The Government of Andhra Pradesh has constituted a Data Centre Advisory Council to drive the state’s ambitious goal of achieving 6,000 MW of data center capacity by 2030. The initiative comes in the wake of major investments such as Google’s 1 GW and Sify Infinity’s 550 MW data centers in Visakhapatnam, further strengthening Andhra Pradesh’s position as a leading data infrastructure hub in India. This move aligns with the Data Centre Policy 4.0, aimed at fast-tracking high-capacity infrastructure and promoting digital growth.

Leadership and Council Composition

The council will be chaired by Nara Lokesh, Minister for Information Technology, Electronics and Communications (ITE&C) of Andhra Pradesh. It brings together leading global and national industry players, including Microsoft Azure, NTT Global Data Centres (GDC), ST Telemedia GDC, Cushman & Wakefield, JLL, Pi Data Centres, Schneider Electric, Nasscom, and the Data Security Council of India (DSCI). The diverse representation ensures a blend of expertise across cloud computing, real estate, renewable energy, and cybersecurity domains.

Mandate and Policy Objectives

The primary role of the council is to offer strategic and technical guidance to the government in creating a comprehensive, time-bound roadmap for data center development. Key focus areas include:

1. Integration of renewable energy and power management solutions

2. Expansion of high-capacity fibre connectivity

3. Establishment of dedicated data centre parks and plug-and-play campuses

4. Continuous policy evaluation and improvement under the Data Centre Policy 4.0

This feedback-driven approach aims to enhance ease of doing business, accelerate project timelines, and boost investor confidence in the state’s digital infrastructure ecosystem.

Accelerating Andhra Pradesh’s Digital Infrastructure Growth

According to state officials, the formation of this advisory body will help transform large investment commitments into operational data center facilities, positioning Andhra Pradesh as a key data hub in South Asia. Leveraging its energy resources, port access, and robust digital infrastructure, the state plans to attract global players while promoting local innovation. Additionally, the council will focus on skill development and research collaboration to ensure long-term, sustainable growth of the data center industry.

Exam-Oriented Facts

1. Target: 6,000 MW data centre capacity in Andhra Pradesh by 2030

2. Chairperson: Nara Lokesh, Minister for ITE&C, Andhra Pradesh

3. Major Investors: Google (1 GW) and Sify Infinity (550 MW), Visakhapatnam

4. Key Members: Microsoft, NTT GDC, ST Telemedia GDC, JLL, Schneider Electric, Nasscom, DSCI

Strategic Importance and Future Outlook

Describing data centers as the “new refineries of the AI era,” Nara Lokesh emphasized their growing role in powering digital economies. With Visakhapatnam emerging as a major data hub following Google’s investment, Andhra Pradesh is set to become a strategic leader in India’s data economy. Supported by renewable power, progressive policy, and a globally aligned ecosystem, the state aims to position itself as a preferred destination for next-generation data infrastructure and innovation.
