A major shift is expected in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) — one of India’s top law entrance exams as the Consortium of National Law Universities (CNLU) has formed an expert committee under the chairpersonship of former Supreme Court judge, Justice Indu Malhotra. The committee will review the CLAT syllabus, question structure, evaluation methods, and other key aspects. It has also invited public feedback to make the exam more education-oriented, merit-based, and globally competitive.
What Changes Are Being Considered?
The expert panel has proposed aligning CLAT with international law entrance exams such as LSAT and LNAT.
Potential reforms include:
1. Enhancing question quality and sectional balance (especially in Legal Reasoning and Reading Comprehension).
2. Introducing essay-type questions alongside MCQs.
3. Reviewing assessment criteria to better evaluate analytical and legal aptitude skills.
When Will These Changes Take Effect?
According to media reports, the new CLAT pattern is likely to be implemented from the 2027 session. The committee is currently accepting suggestions until November 4, 2025.
Who’s on the Committee?
The panel includes several eminent legal scholars from India and abroad, such as:
1. Prof. Dev Saif Ganji (Oxford University)
2. Prof. Tarunabh Khaitan (LSE)
3. Prof. Shyamkrishna Balganesh (Columbia University)
4. Prof. Surabhi Ranganathan (Cambridge University)
Their expertise will help bring an international perspective to the exam’s restructuring.
Tips for CLAT Aspirants
1. Focus on Legal Reasoning, Legal Reading, and Argumentation — these areas are likely to gain more weightage.
2. Practice mock tests based on potential new patterns, including essay-style questions.
3. Since the public suggestion window is open, aspirants can also share their feedback online — an opportunity to influence exam reform directly.
