Description
India’s prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are now introducing alternative admission routes beyond the traditional JEE Advanced examination. Under the new system, students demonstrating exceptional achievements in sports, Olympiads, or art and culture will be considered for admission through special channels. This initiative aims to recognize diverse talents and provide opportunities for meritorious students who have excelled at national or international levels.
What Is the New Admission Model?
Several IITs, including IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur, have launched or approved admission channels that allow outstanding Olympiad performers or sportspersons to gain entry without relying solely on high JEE ranks.
1. IIT Madras has introduced the Science Olympiad Excellence (ScOpE) mode, enabling students who have participated in national or international Olympiads to apply directly.
2. IIT Kanpur has also announced that international Olympiad medalists may secure admission into B.Tech or BS programs through a special route.
Eligibility and Selection Process
To be eligible under these new pathways:
1. The student must have passed Class 12 and fulfilled the age and academic criteria.
2. Olympiad candidates must have shown top performance in subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Informatics.
3. For sports-based admissions, national or international medal achievements will be recognized as valid criteria.
Important Points to Note
1. These new admission routes are not uniform across all IITs — some institutions are currently in the pilot stage.
2. In certain IITs, a minimum JEE qualification requirement may still apply, meaning JEE scores might not be completely waived.
3. The number of seats under this scheme will be limited and supernumerary, ensuring that they do not affect the regular admission process.
