Description

The Indian Naval Ship (INS) Sahyadri docked at Busan Naval Harbour, South Korea, on October 13, 2025, marking a significant milestone in naval diplomacy between India and South Korea. This visit saw the first bilateral naval exercise between the Indian Navy (IN) and the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN), underscoring the deepening strategic ties and naval collaboration between the two countries in the Indo-Pacific region.

INS Sahyadri: A Testament To India’s Indigenous Naval Strength

INS Sahyadri, a Shivalik-class guided missile stealth frigate, was indigenously designed and built in India, with its commissioning completed in 2012. Operating under the Eastern Naval Command from Visakhapatnam, the vessel is a flagship of India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, reflecting self-reliance in defense production. Over the years, INS Sahyadri has actively participated in multiple bilateral and multilateral naval exercises, highlighting India's growing maritime capabilities on the global stage.

Highlights Of IN-RoKN Bilateral Exercise

This inaugural bilateral exercise included both harbour and sea phases. During the harbour phase, naval personnel from both navies engaged in cross-deck visits, exchanged best practices, conducted joint training sessions, and organized friendly sporting events. Senior officers also met with local dignitaries and senior RoKN officials. The sea phase featured coordinated maneuvers between INS Sahyadri and the South Korean frigate ROKS Gyeongnam, enhancing operational interoperability and fostering mutual confidence.

Strategic Significance Of Indo-Pacific Naval Cooperation

The Indo-Pacific region has emerged as a critical theatre for global maritime security. India and South Korea recognize the importance of forging robust naval partnerships to safeguard regional stability and uphold freedom of navigation. Their naval collaboration signals a shared commitment to addressing evolving security challenges and reinforcing a rules-based maritime order in these strategically vital waters.

India’s Commitment To Regional Maritime Security

The deployment of INS Sahyadri to the South China Sea and broader Indo-Pacific highlights India’s role as a responsible maritime actor. Through such naval exercises and diplomatic engagements, India aims to position itself as a reliable security partner, fostering stability and cooperation along key international sea lanes.

Strengthening Naval Ties And Strategic Dialogue

The cooperation between the Indian Navy and the Republic of Korea Navy has grown steadily in recent years. Continuous dialogue and joint activities paved the way for this first-ever bilateral exercise. The partnership also encompasses broader strategic conversations at governmental levels, reflecting India’s efforts to deepen ties with key Indo-Pacific nations and contribute to regional security architecture.
