Description
India’s forest protectors, known as Van Rakshaks, are at the forefront of safeguarding the nation’s biodiversity. A recent report by the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) commemorates 25 years of dedicated support to these frontline personnel, highlighting their courage, sacrifices, and the challenges they face in protecting forests and wildlife.
Key Insights From WTI Report
The report, titled Guardians of the Wild Supporting India’s Frontline Forest Staff, was released in Abu Dhabi and showcases stories of 540 rangers who were killed or injured while on duty. The launch was attended by Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Kirtivardhan Singh. It underscores the critical role of Van Rakshaks in managing over 1,100 protected areas and numerous other forest regions across India.
Duties And Responsibilities Of Van Rakshaks
Van Rakshaks perform continuous patrolling, monitoring wildlife populations, and managing human-wildlife conflicts. They actively combat poaching, curb wildlife crimes, and respond to emergencies such as forest fires and animal rescues. Their work demands physical endurance, alertness, and an in-depth understanding of ecosystems, often placing them in life-threatening situations.
The Van Rakshak Project And Skill Development
Launched in 2000 with support from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), the Van Rakshak Project aims to create a well-trained and motivated frontline force. Over the past 25 years, it has trained and supported more than 21,000 personnel across India. The initiative provides skill development, essential equipment, and welfare support to enhance the effectiveness and safety of forest staff.
Supplementary Accident Assurance Scheme
An important component of the project is the Supplementary Accident Assurance Scheme, which offers immediate financial assistance to personnel injured or killed while on duty. Since 2001, 367 frontline workers or their families have benefited, with nearly 74% of cases involving fatalities. This scheme provides crucial support during times of crisis.
Support Amid COVID-19 Pandemic
During the COVID-19 pandemic, WTI introduced the Conservation Heroes COVID Casualty Fund to support 173 families of forest staff who lost their lives due to the virus. This initiative highlighted the dual risks faced by Van Rakshaks, who had to continue their demanding conservation work amid a global health crisis.
Challenges And Need For Recognition
Van Rakshaks often work in remote, hostile environments and face constant threats from poachers and dangerous wildlife. Limited resources, inadequate recognition, and the harsh nature of their work make their roles even more challenging. The report calls for increased investment in forest protection, provision of modern equipment, and greater societal appreciation of the sacrifices made by these guardians of the wild.
